ScreamFest

WOW!!  What an amazing 3 nights of ScreamFest!!! It was fantastic to see so many of our students, and so many families from other schools attend this hauntingly fun community event. Nearly 2000 people attended over the 3 nights.

This kind of event cannot happen without hundreds and hundreds of volunteer hours.  A HUGE THANK YOU to every student, staff member, parent, and community member who donated their time for promoting, setting-up, running/supervising activities & stations, performing in the haunted walks, dismantling the sets, and other various errands throughout the event.  Every contribution, big or small, brought it all together to make these nights a huge success. 

Another HUGE THANK YOU to many generous donors of food and prize items; your contributions added more layers of excitement for our visitors.

To the key staff members who spear-headed the planning and overall running of ScreamFest behind the scenes (and have had very little sleep for the past week) you are extraordinary!!  You know who you are and your commitment is noticed and appreciated.

Last, buy not least, a HUGE THANK YOU to Mike Brooks, the dreamer, creator and builder of ScreamFest. Your enthusiasm for Halloween and ScreamFest is off the charts!!

Health Careers Presentation – TODAY

A representative from Saanich Peninsula Youth Health Clinic will be here TODAY at lunch in room 200 (Ms McAvoy’s room) to discuss volunteer opportunities for students. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in health.  Come check it out!

 

Cafeteria – Cash Sales Only

In the Cafeteria, until further notice, there will be cash sales or punch cards ONLY.  If needed, $5 and $10 Cafeteria punch cards can be purchased in the accounting office using debit or credit.

 

School Bus Cards

If you registered to ride the school bus at the start of this year, a large number of bus cards have arrived.  Please come to the office to pick yours up.

 

Literacy & Numeracy

The next Literacy & Numeracy Assessments take place on November 4^th.  A list has been posted by the front entrance of the school of students who need to sign up for the Numeracy 10 Assessment.  If your name is on that list, please see Mrs. Watson to sign up.

 

Zero Café

The Zero Cafè is officially open in the IGS Room (264) before school (8:30-8:55) and at lunch every day of the week.  Your favourite drinks are here: ice coffees, Caramel Lattes, Cappuccinos, Americanos, etc, etc, etc. We now have TAP for easy payments with debit and credit cards. Please pop down and check us out!

 

Students: Check your School Email

Reminder for all students to check their School District email. Information and reminders are sent to your school email on a regular basis regarding course changes, registration, events, and other topics.

 

Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club is running on TUESDAY and THURSDAY mornings (before block 1) at the Spartan Store.  All students are welcome to come by for a bagel (with choice of spreads) and a juice box. Items are $.25 each. 

 

After School Homework Club

For all students who would like extra help in academic classes, help from Education Assistants is available four days a week (MONDAY-THURSDAY) for one hour after school in room 235. All academic subjects are welcome, but especially if you are struggling in Math & Science. This is open to all students in all grades.

Dual Credit Course: Early Learning & Care Program

Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of children? Perhaps considering a career as an Early Childhood Educator?  Camosun has an Early Learning and Care Program starting in February.  This is a dual-credit program, which gives you the certification to be an ELC Assistant. See Mr. Bussoli with questions or to sign up.

 

UVic Info Session – TODAY

UVic is hosting a presentation geared towards Grade 12 students (Grade 11’s can benefit from the information as well), covering general UVic topics, including: co-op and academic opportunities, application & admission processes, awards, student services, upcoming events, etc. Presentation is TODAY at lunch in the Learning Commons.

 

U of Alberta – Nov.3

An advisor from the University of Alberta will be at Claremont to share information about U of A's programs, application processes, and other topics related to Post Secondary school in Edmonton, Alberta!  THURSDAY, Nov. 3 at lunch time in the Learning Commons.

 

Job Opportunities

Broadmead Care is looking for day and afternoon staff within our facilities for Food Service (hours 7:00-3:00, 3:15-7:15, 4:00-7:00, Housekeeping (7:00-3:00, 3:15-11:15), and Screening (5:30-1:00, 11-4, 12-8, 8-4).  They have 5 care homes from Sidney to James Bay, with our Royal Oak Lodge being the biggest. 

Work involves working with the elderly and would require a criminal record check (Broadmead Care will arrange for this), TB test, and Food safe (if working in food service). Most jobs start around $21 and up.  For more information, please contact: Jill.Huckin@broadmeadcare.com

 

Canadian Tire at Royal Oak is looking for energetic students who would like a part time job. We are looking for cashiers and floor staff for all departments (Automotive, Housewares, Hardware and Sports/Seasonal). Hours are flexible, but new hires are asked to work one weekend day shift and one night shift. Studio 63 Hair Studio & Food Bank Donations

Did you know that School District #63 has its own Hairstylist training program?  Studio 63 offers Hairdressing training in partnership with Vancouver Island University.  Studio 63 is located at the Saanichton Learning Centre, 1649 Mt Newton X Rd.

From Oct.24 – Dec. 1, Studio 63 is hosting a canned food drive in conjunction with their hair studio services, to support our local food bank. 

Basic Haircut - $2 with canned food donation.

Shampoo, Cut & Style - $5 with canned food donation.

Peninsula Youth Clinic

The Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at 2379 Bevan Avenue in Sidney and is open every THURSDAY from 5:30-7:30pm for help with any medical concern (physical, mental, and sexual health). Call 250-656-4143 to make an appointment with a physician or counsellor.  Services are 100% free, confidential, and explicitly inclusive of all genders and sexualities!
