¬ GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Food Drive May 6-10

Two more days!  FILL BUCK'S TRUCK Food Drive is happening all THIS WEEK: May 6-10 in Block 1 classes. Please donate to the Mustard Seed; bring canned food and personal hygiene products in your Block 1 class. Cash is also accepted. The winning class with the most donations gets a Breakfast party!

 

Rainbow Day – May 10

Our next school theme day is TOMORROW: Rainbow Day!!  Wear lots of colour!!

 

cc350 - May 24

The Claremont cc350 is on the horizon and rider sign-ups are now open.  This year the CC350 will raise funds for the BC Sierra Club and their incredible work with eco conservation. The event is on May 24th and will be a full day of fun & cycling for change. Grab a few friends and head to the IGS room at lunch for more info and to sign up!

 

Dual Credit Registration Session

For all students wanting to take the Dual Credit Math 100 course next year:

There is an important registration meeting TODAY at lunch in the Career Centre (Room 217). It is important to be there.

 

Blood Donor Clinic – May 13

Claremont, are you ready to roll up your sleeves?? Reminder that Claremont will be hosting a blood drive THIS MONDAY May 13 in the small gym, 10:00-4:45. It is open to eligible students aged 17 years or older, staff, and the public.  There is still time to book your appointments through Canadian Blood Services at blood.ca.  For questions, please see Ms. Chapman in the math wing.  

 

New School Bus Registration Information

If you plan to ride the school bus next year, there is new information about FEES and registration.  Please see all information on the SD63 website Transportation page: saanichschools.ca/resources/studentsfamilies/transportation.  

 

After School Homework Club

For all students who would like extra help in academic classes, help from Education Assistants is available four days a week (MONDAY-THURSDAY) for one hour after school in room 235. All academic subjects are welcome. This is open to all students in all grades.

Claremont Musical Theatre Presents: “Anything Goes”… May 23 - June 1

Performance dates are May 23-25 and May 29 – June 1 at 7 pm.  Additional matinees May 25th and June 1st at 1 pm.  All tickets are $17.50 in advance or $20 at the door. Purchase tickets through your SD63 online account LINK or in person at the accounting office.  For questions, please call Mrs. Waller at 250-658-5221 ext. 81572.

For all track athletes: there is a mandatory meeting TODAY at lunch.

 

NEW - Girls Soccer

The Girls Senior Soccer team has done exceptionally well on their last few games.   They won their last game against Reynolds in a sudden death penalty shoot-out and have qualified for the Ryan Cup city final match, which will be held at Starlight stadium on May 23. Go Spartans!!

 

NEW – Golf

Congratulations to the Claremont Golf Team who clinched their third victory of the season, winning the city championship yesterday at Cedar Hill Golf Course. Our Spartans finished 5 strokes ahead of 2nd place Oak Bay.  Go Spartans!!

 

Rugby

The Junior Boys Rugby team is hosting Shawnigan Lake School TODAY at 1:00pm.  This is an island semi-final and qualification game for the provincial championships. Student on spares and classes that are available: please come out and support the team.

INDIGENOUS EDUCATION

NEW - Moose Hide Campaign Day – May 16

The Moose Hide Campaign began as a BC-born Indigenous-led grassroots movement to engage men and boys in ending violence towards women and children. It has since grown into a nationwide movement of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians from all aspects of our communities. A cornerstone of the Moose Hide Campaign is the moose hide pin. Wearing the pin signifies your commitment to honour, respect, and protect the women and children in your life and speak out against gender-based and domestic violence. NEW - UVic Registration Info Session - May 14

Attention students attending UVic in the Fall - Join us for a Registration 101 Session!  During this informative session, you will learn how to be prepared for every aspect of course registration coming up in June: how to stay organized and choose first-year courses, build a course timetable, navigate the UVic registration system, and more! Please SIGN UP with Mrs. Watson in the Career Centre, or email her at cwatson@saanichschools.ca   Session is TUESDAY, May 14 at lunch (11:45-12:30).  Location to be announced later, based on numbers.

 

Job Opportunity

Summer Job Opportunity

Cordova Bay United Church (around the corner from Claremont) is looking for a motivated, hardworking, flexible young person, who can work independently, as a Programs Assistant under the federal government’s Canada Summer Jobs program. The position involves office administration, working with children and youth, utilizing electronic communication techniques, as well as special projects.

Duration of job: June 3-August 30. $19/hour for 30 hours work per week. The training hours required during June might be able to be flexible. Application deadline: May 15.  See Mrs. Watson in the Career Centre or email her at cwatson@saanichschools.ca for more info.

 

Health X-Ploration Day in May

If you are considering a career in the Health Care Industry, sign up for a field trip to Camosun College, for a Health 'X-ploration' Day! Students will explore dual credit pathways in various health programs including practical nursing, health care assistant, medical radiography and certified medical lab assistant. Event dates are either May 15 OR May 28. Date/times will be determined, based on interest and attendance numbers.  See Mr. Bussoli in the Career Centre to sign up!

 

Saanich Police Youth Leadership Certificate! July/August

The District of Saanich’s Youth Division is pleased to announce the Saanich Police Youth Leadership Certificate. In this hands-on program, mentors help students gain leadership skills to put towards future employment or post-secondary education. The program is perfect for youth who are interested in future work in a community setting, human services role, or as a first responder with Police, Fire, Ambulance, or the Coast Guard.  The program takes place in the summer all day, on July 10 OR August 14. Island Ignite Summer Event: July 12-14

Are you interested in being a Firefighter and want to test it out? Female students going into Grades 11 and 12 are invited to join a two-day, hands-on event in Victoria, July 12-14.  Applications are being accepted now!  Visit the Career Centre for more information and to apply.

CPAC Staff Appreciation Lunch May 29

Science Rendezvous STEM Festival – May 11

Science Rendezvous is one of Canada’s largest, FREE, one-day STEM festivals. This event is a great opportunity for students and families of all ages to engage in science in a fun and interactive way

Science Rendezvous is hosted by UVic, Camosun College, and Ocean Networks Canada, and offers students K-12, educators, and science enthusiasts of all ages the opportunity to engage in hands-on STEM learning by participating in 35+ activities side-by-side with real, world-renowned scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and computer and software experts who live right here in Victoria. 

Walk through a state-of-the-art greenhouse, peer at the stars using the largest telescope on any Canadian university campus, demo the latest tech for renewable energy, investigate a human skeleton to uncover who they once were, experiment with lasers, explore the ocean…there’s science galore at Science Rendezvous!

Learning Through Loss – Youth Event May 26

Learning Through Loss is hosting a free community event for students, Eat Play Influence, on Sunday May 26th - 12:00-3:30. 

Location: Fort Tectoria - 777 Fort St. 

This event is for students interested in learning more about how their positive influence can help youth in the Grief and Loss community and discover the healing powers of youth advocacy. Peninsula Youth Clinic

The Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at 2379 Bevan Avenue in Sidney and is open every THURSDAY from 5:30-7:30pm for help with any medical concern (physical, mental, and sexual health). Call 250-656-4143 to make an appointment with a physician or counsellor.  Services are 100% free, confidential, and explicitly inclusive of all genders and sexualities!
