¬ GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Successful “Fill Buck’s Truck” Food Drive

THANK YOU everyone for last week’s successful food drive!  A BIG thank you goes out our school community as a whole for donating a large number of food items. We reached our goal to “Fill Buck’s Truck”, and all items were picked up by a very grateful representative of the Mustard Seed Food Bank on Friday afternoon.  A special congrats goes to Mr. Freeburn’s block 1 Lit11 class for having the highest total of 180 items donated, and most importantly a HUGE thank you goes to Ms. G., who organized and pumped up this worthwhile event: GREAT WORK CLAREMONT!  

 

NEW – Silent Auction May 7-10

Everyone and anyone is welcome to join in on our Silent Auction to support the grad class of 2023. There is a huge assortment of wonderful prizes, and details are under the Grad 2023 section of this Chronicle.

A change purse (with money inside) was found last week.  Please come to the office to claim it.

 

Lunchtime Salad Bar

The lunchtime salad bar reopens TODAY.  It will be open from 11:55-12:20 Monday-Thursday in the Spartan Store until the end of the school year.  Come by to enjoy some healthy fresh greens and toppings for lunch!

 

Blood Donor Clinic – May 15

Help save lives, Spartans. Claremont is hosting a blood donation clinic on MONDAY, May 15th in the small gym.  Students must be at least 17yrs old to donate.  Take the eligibility quiz at blood.ca and if you are eligible, sign up on the "GiveBlood" app.  See the posters around the school or see Ms Chapman in room 136 for more information. 

 

School Bus Registration For 2023-2024

Online school bus registration for next school year is open.  To register, you will need your Student #.  Registration link is on the Saanich School District website or HERE.

 

After School Homework Club

For all students who would like extra help in academic classes, help from Education Assistants is available four days a week (MONDAY-THURSDAY) for one hour after school in room 235. All academic subjects are welcome, but especially if you are struggling in Math & Science. This is open to all students in all grades.

Musical Theatre “The SpongeBob Musical”:  May 25 – June 3

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea??  The Claremont Musical Theatre program will be presenting the fun and family-friendly, “The SpongeBob Musical.”  Tickets are on sale now!  Shows run from May 25-27 and May 31-June 3, 7pm nightly, plus Saturday matinees at 1pm.  Tickets are sold ONLINE, with limited availability at the door for cash sales only. All tickets are $15 plus service charge

NEW - Grad Fundraiser: Silent Auction May 7-10

The Silent Auction is LIVE and bidding is open until 9pm THIS WEDNESDAY, May 10!  If you haven’t already done so, create an Account on 32auctions.com and then click on https://www.32auctions.com/ClaremontGrad2023 to view and place bids.

Winning Bidders will be able to pay and pick up their items this SATURDAY, MAY 13 at Claremont between 11-1. Payment for items can be made by cash, cheque or e-transfer.

Grad Fundraiser: Spring Flower Baskets – Pickup is May 10

Reminder that the Mother’s Day/Spring Flowers Baskets will be available for pickup on WEDNESDAY, May 10th between 2:45 and 3:45pm.  Please come around the back of the school to pick up your orders.  Please note: these baskets are for the families that pre-ordered (through grad or lacrosse).

 

Grad Fundraiser:  Ongoing Bottle Drive

An easy way to support the 2023 Grad Class is by donating empty bottles and beverage containers throughout the school year until June at the Bottle Depot location at Glanford/Quadra.  Account name is “Claremont Grad 2023.” Thank you for supporting the grad class of 2023.

Engineering for Kids Vancouver Island is hiring Assistant and Lead Camp Instructors for their STEM Camps (for kids ages 5½ - 12). Information and application info HERE.

A Claremont neighbour is looking for a student to do seasonal, part-time, light yard work.  Minimum wage for a 2-hour minimum gardening day. Preferable that you have your own vehicle to haul garden debris. Summer Employment with Saanich School District

Grade 12 Students: The Saanich School District #63 will be hiring summer staff in the Custodial Department!  Full-time, union positions will be available from the end of June until end of August, with the opportunity for continuing employment.  Earn competitive wages vs. minimum wage.  You must have your own transportation, and you must be a graduate by the end of June. Volunteer Opportunities

The 50th Operation Trackshoes is looking for Volunteer Counsellors. Event takes place June 9-11, and training starts May 8!

Operation Trackshoes is a weekend-long provincial sports festival for people with developmental disabilities. It includes a full-length competitive track & field meet, events for people in wheelchairs, as well as fun and recreational events appropriate for all ages and levels of ability.

Volunteer Counsellors are matched with competitors for 2-days, 3-days, or part-time as needed, to provide support, assistance, and friendship at the event.  No experience necessary, except a sincere desire to lend a hand as you can!

The first orientation for volunteers is May 8, so please see Mrs. Watson in room 222 as soon as possible, for more information - or email her at cwatson@saanichschools.ca

 

NEW - Science Venture is looking for volunteers entering grades 10-12 to join their summer camp team as Junior Counsellors!  This is a non-profit STEM outreach organization that offers programming to youth aged 5-18 on Vancouver Island. During July and August, summer camps are run at UVic, themed around a variety of STEM subject areas such as engineering, coding, STEAM, medical sciences, and general STEM. Students will be involved in leading games, engaging with campers, and learning about STEM.

Successful JC applicants are also eligible for a $100 discount on our Leaders in Engineering and Design (LED) programs that also takes place during the summer. There are limited spots available and applications for LED close June 6th. 

 

30 Hours of Work Experience/Volunteering

30 Hours of Work Experience OR Volunteering are required for Graduation. Hours can be counted from any grade. See Mrs. Watson in room 222 to find out how to confirm your 30 hours. If you're not working, there are lots of ideas for looking into Volunteerism.  You can discuss ideas with Mrs. Watson and she can point out a list of possibility volunteer opportunities.

Peninsula Youth Clinic

The Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at 2379 Bevan Avenue in Sidney and is open every THURSDAY from 5:30-7:30pm for help with any medical concern (physical, mental, and sexual health). Call 250-656-4143 to make an appointment with a physician or counsellor.  Services are 100% free, confidential, and explicitly inclusive of all genders and sexualities!
