Robotics Tournament Success

Claremont's gym was turned into a Robotics ThunderDome this past Saturday as we hosted over 30 teams from across Vancouver Island.  Two Claremont teams won awards at this event (including "Tournament Champions").  For some of the Robotics students, this was the first time they had experienced an event something like this.  Congratulations to all of the Claremont Robotics players!


Pizza Sales Today - Sr Boys BBall Fundraiser

The Senior Boys Basketball team is selling pizza TODAY at lunch in the cafeteria as part of a fundraiser. Come down and support the program if you can!!!
 

Mr Ryan's Block 1 & 4 PE Classes

Mr. Ryan's Block 1 and Block 4 Jr. PE classes can pick up their pizza for the winning teams and less fortunate captains TODAY at the beginning of lunch in the PE office.
 

Ms Taylor's Block 3 PE Class

A reminder to Ms. Taylor's block 3, PE 9 class that there will be pizza TODAY at lunch in the small gym.   Aaliyah's team won!

 

Ms Taylor's Blocks 2 & 4 PE Classes

A reminder to Ms. Taylor's blocks 2 and 4 classes: your pizza will be at lunch in the small gym on TUESDAY.  Charlotte's team won in block 2 and Ava's team won in block 4.

Semester 2 timetables are available to pick up the office.

 

Cafeteria Service: Jan.23-27

For everyone’s lunch-planning needs, please note that the Cafeteria will have pizza service only on MONDAY and TUESDAY (Jan. 23 & 24), and will be CLOSED for service on WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY & FRIDAY (Jan.25-27).

 

Literacy and Numeracy Assessments – Jan. 23-27

Literacy and Numeracy assessments are January 23, 24 & 27. All current English 10 classes will write Lit 10 with their class and Workplace Math will write Numeracy 10 with their class. These students do not need to sign up!

 

The following students need to sign up with Mrs. Watson in room 222:

  • Grade 11s and 12s missing either of your Num 10 or Lit 10. 
  • Grade 12s who missed Lit 12 in November with their English 12 class.
  • Grade 10s who missed Num 10 in November with their Math 10 class.
  • Or if your name is on the list posted out front of the office.

All information is posted outside the office, or see Mrs. Watson or Mrs. O'Brien for questions.

Revised Class Schedule – Jan. 23 & 24 only

To properly schedule these assessments, the entire school will follow a Copernican class schedule consisting of two long blocks per day

MONDAY Jan. 23

Block 1: 9:00 – 11:45  (Lit/Num Assessments: 9:00 – 12:00)

Block 3: 12:30 – 3:12  (Lit/Num Assessments: 12:30 – 3:30)

 

TUESDAY Jan.24

Block 2: 9:00 – 11:45  (Lit/Num Assessments: 9:00 – 12:00)

Block 4: 12:30 – 3:12  (Lit/Num Assessments: 12:30 – 3:30)

 

After School Homework Club

For all students who would like extra help in academic classes, help from Education Assistants is available four days a week (MONDAY-THURSDAY) for one hour after school in room 235. All academic subjects are welcome, but especially if you are struggling in Math & Science. This is open to all students in all grades.

 

Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club is running on TUESDAY and THURSDAY mornings (before block 1) at the Spartan Store.  All students are welcome to come by for a bagel (with choice of spreads) and a juice box. Items are $.25 each.

Do you play piano, sing, rap, or create music and want a venue to perform? Any student who wants to perform something musical at the Feb.14th Music Cafe, talk to or email Ms. English before Feb.1st

Grad Fundraiser:  Ongoing Bottle Drive

An easy way to support the 2023 Grad Class is by donating empty bottles and beverage containers throughout the school year until June at the Bottle Depot location at Glanford/Quadra.  Account name is “Claremont Grad 2023.” Thank you for supporting the grad class of 2023.

Grad Photos & Retakes – Jan 23,24,25

Appointments for Grad Photos and Retakes are this week on January 23, 24, & 25 at Claremont School (in the Lifetouch portable photo trailer).

If you are scheduling a first-time appointment, a $30 sitting fee will be due at the time of your appointment.  If you are only having your photo taken for the yearbook no sitting fee is required.

Skills Canada Competitions

Registration for this year's Regional South Island Skills Canada Competitions will be open soon!  Online or face-to-face competitions will be held, covering areas like automotive, baking, hairstyling, welding, electronics, pipe trades, job search, photography, and more...

Competitions will be in March, with the deadline for registration mid-February. Keep watching announcements for more information.  See Mr. Bussoli in room 217 if you are interested in competing. More information HERE.

 

District of Saanich: Job Fair – Jan.26

The District of Saanich and the Saanich Police Department are holding a Job Fair!  Join the event and meet with hiring managers and representatives from Engineering, Public Works, Parks & Rec, IT, Planning & Development, Police/Fire, Admin Support, and other departments.

There are many positions for grade 10-12 students.  For example:

Parks & Rec needs Program Leaders & Assistants for camps, and Swim Instructors for pools.  Public Works needs Labourers and Compost Attendants.  

Job Fair is THURSDAY, January 26. Drop-in from 3:00-6:00pm.

Summer Employment with Saanich School District

Grade 12 Students: The Saanich School District #63 will be hiring summer staff in the Custodial Department!  Full-time, union positions will be available from the end of June until end of August, with the opportunity for continuing employment.  Earn competitive wages vs. minimum wage.  You must have your own transportation, and you must be a graduate by the end of June. ¬ NEWS FROM CLAREMONT PAC

YMCA-YWCA Y Mind Groups: Multiple Sessions

The YMCA-YWCA Y Mind Groups are a free, weekly psychoeducational support group for teens 13-18 and young adults 18-30 experiencing stress, worries and anxiety. Participants learn healthy coping skills through mindfulness and the ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) process to manage their anxiety, connect with other young people and receive support all in a safe and supportive community environment. The program is designed to provide tools and support to folks who experience mild to moderate anxiety and is funded by the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions as an early intervention program. The participants get a free Y gym membership during the program.  Online registration for information/intake sessions is available HERE.   

Parent information Evening:- Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada – Feb.23

A few members of CPAC will represent Claremont at the Annual District Parent Information Evening Feb 23 (7:00 - 8:30 pm) at Bayside Middle School. All school PACs are being invited. Trustees as well as school and district administration will also be in attendance. 

This Giant Map shares the stories, perspectives, voices and history of the Indigenous Peoples of Canada. It includes historic and contemporary maps and explores themes of language, demographics, economy and culture. Important topics such as treaties and residential schools are covered in-depth, as well as the contributions of Indigenous Peoples, their oral traditions and land-based knowledge.

Here is an easy way to support your PAC year-round. Save your Country Grocer receipts and bring them to the school front office. We appreciate your participation in this fundraiser which will benefit our school community with up to $2000 in grocery gift cards.

Cordova Bay Fastball

Registration is open for Cordova Bay Fastball for all levels (for Claremont students: the categories are U17 and U15, but there is also U11 and U7 for younger athletes).  Registration is free.  Registration information can be found at CordovaBayFastball.ca

 

Peninsula Youth Clinic

The Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at 2379 Bevan Avenue in Sidney and is open every THURSDAY from 5:30-7:30pm for help with any medical concern (physical, mental, and sexual health). Call 250-656-4143 to make an appointment with a physician or counsellor.  Services are 100% free, confidential, and explicitly inclusive of all genders and sexualities!
