NEW – Police Camp

Five students were chosen to attend Police Camp, and one for Fire Camp, during Spring Break 2025! 

Congratulations to Police Camp applicants: 

Nick B. / Avi D. / Kai P. / Ryland T. and Kaylen W.

And congrats also, to Fire Camp applicant, Landon D.

The students had to apply and compete against other applicants across Victoria and the Gulf Islands, by taking part in intensive interviews. 

We are proud of all the Claremont students who applied!

NEW – School Trip

Computer Contest 

Any student interested in writing the Waterloo Computer Contest in February, please see Mr. Beeston in Rm 236 to sign up. The deadline is February 13th. 

Parent Volunteers/Drivers

Reminder that all volunteers for School District 63 are required to complete a Criminal Record Check every three years. Sports and trips will start up quickly, so we encourage parents to be proactive and do this NOW, if you might be interested in driving; the process can take a few weeks at rush time.  The LINK to information can be found on the Claremont Secondary home page, under the Parents tab, Volunteer Information.

If a Student is Absent or Late

Parents are asked to please email your student’s teacher AND the Attendance Line if your student will be absent or late for class. The Link for the Claremont Attendance Line is always quick to find on the Quick Links on the Claremont website’s home page: claremont_attendance@saanichschools.ca  or by phone by calling our main phone line at 250-658-5221 and selecting Option 1 for Attendance.

NEW - Basketball 

After an amazing start to the game, the Jr. Girls Basketball team refused to lose after falling behind in their quarter-finals. They advance to the semi-finals tonight at 5:45pm vs SMUS at St. Michaels. 

The senior girls had a sizzling start to their game, however, Oak Bay was a bit too much

Finally, the Jr. Varsity Boys showed what happens when "Defense Never Sleeps" as they held Royal Bay to 34 points to our 63 last night. They advance to the semi-finals here against Oak Bay. Your support for Friday Night Hoops at Home at 7:15pm would be very much appreciated by these young men. 

Track & Field

Students interested in track and Field, there will be a meeting in room 321 on Friday at the start of lunch.

¬ CLUBS

Claremont is excited to announce our new Claremont Business Club! 

This new club provides opportunities for students to learn and practice entrepreneurial skills and gain business experience and mentorship in real-world situations. The club aims to participate in a case study competition and conference in Vancouver in late April and has other opportunities in the works. Join the club Tuesdays at lunch in room 311, get a snack and have a chance to win prizes! Contact Mr. Fast for more information.

Math Contest 

Sign-up sheets for the Pascal, Cayley and Fermat math contests are on the bulletin board outside room 133 in the math wing.  These contests take place in block 1 on Wednesday, Feb 26 in the Learning Commons, and they are the best contest to try if you have never tried one before.  See Mr. Skanks if you have any questions.  Registration deadline is February 11th.

Bottle Drive

Save your Cans and Bottles from Superbowl.  The Claremont CSI Lacrosse Program is having a Bottle Drive on Saturday February 15th.  More details to come.

NEW - Educational Opportunity

Women in Orthopedics (WORTH) Event for High School Students - Via Zoom!

Female students in Grades 10-12: If you're interested in pursuing a career in healthcare and engineering, specifically in orthopedics, sign up for this great event!

This workshop will provide insights into what it is like working as an orthopedic resident, walking through various orthopedic cases.

• Date/Time:  Saturday, March 1, 10am - 11:30am (Online, via Zoom)

• Registration Deadline is February 24.

NEW - Volunteers Needed During Spring Break:

Victoria Artistic Swimming is hosting one of the sport’s biggest Canadian events, right here at Saanich Commonwealth Place! Volunteers are needed March 16-23. A variety of volunteer positions are available – sign up for as many or as few as work for you; Commitment is typically between two and six hours; related experience is not required.

Volunteer Opportunity - Cordova Bay United Church is looking for 1-3 students to help with Audio/Visual during services and their website. Training is provided as needed, hours for the Audio/Visual help are Sundays for 2 hours. Website volunteer hours are flexible.

The Butchart Gardens is now having their Job Fair on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, from 5:30 – 7:30pm. They are recruiting for spring and summer employment in most departments. Contest 

The WorkSafeBC 2025 Student Safety Video Contest is underway and open until April 1, 2025. The contest website, including full details, rules, and the contest entry form is at www.worksafebc.com/studentvideocontest. This year’s contest theme, Show up, Speak Up for Safety, asks students to create a short video that explores how young workers can go beyond just showing up at work, to speaking up when something feels unsafe.

- There are four $2,500 prizes to be shared by the students and their schools

- Entries are to be submitted by the teacher 

- Contest deadline is 5 pm, Tuesday, April 1, 2025

Volunteer Opportunity

If you are interested in teaching, or working as an Education Assistant or Early Childhood Educator, and you have a SPARE or altered class schedule. A kindergarten teacher at Cordova Bay Elementary is looking for student volunteers to observe and help in her classroom.

• The commitment is flexible, from 1-2 hours at a time, 1-3 days per week. 

• You would need your own transportation and permission from a parent/guardian.

• Earn volunteer hours doing something interesting and fun, that could influence your career path!

Peninsula Youth Clinic

The Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at 2379 Bevan Avenue in Sidney and is open every THURSDAY from 5:30-7:30pm for help with any medical concern (physical, mental, and sexual health). Call 250-656-4143 to make an appointment with a physician or counsellor.  Services are 100% free, confidential, and explicitly inclusive of all genders and sexualities!
