Presentation Follow-up – Today

A reminder to all grade 9 and 10 students: our guest speaker that visited Claremont just before the break, Doctor Gunderson, will be here in the theatre TODAY at lunchtime, if anyone would like to speak with her further regarding the information contained in her presentation, "A Look At Racism in Our Community."  This is an opportunity to engage in more in-depth discussion; feel free to drop-in TODAY at lunch if you are interested!

 

Lost & Found

Two Invisalign mouth retainers, a pair of eye glasses with purple frames, and a silver-tone ring were found on Monday. Please come to the office to claim them.

 

Semester 1 FoodSafe Certificates

If you went through FoodSafe training last semester with Ms. Robertson, Mr. Harper or

Mr. Bowd, please come to the Foods office to collect your FoodSafe certificate.

 

Bus #11: Change in Departure Time After School

Reminder for all students who ride bus #11 in the afternoons: starting TODAY, Bus #11 will leave Claremont earlier (at 3:30) on WEDNESDAYS and FRIDAYS. If you have any questions, please ask the driver.

 

Green Shirt Day – April 14

In support of the BC Transplant Organization and Humboldt Broncos player, Logan Boulet, we are recognizing Green Shirt Day NEXT FRIDAY April 14.  You can participate by wearing a green shirt on the 14th. PEP students will have a table in the lounge at lunch where you can gather more information about this important cause and Logan Boulet’s legacy.

 

Encourage kids to READ

Come to the Learning Commons, grab a bookmark and colour them - then we'll send them to Lochside and Cordova Bay Elementary students. Choose from a variety of designs.

 

After School Homework Club

For all students who would like extra help in academic classes, help from Education Assistants is available four days a week (MONDAY-THURSDAY) for one hour after school in room 235. All academic subjects are welcome, but especially if you are struggling in Math & Science. This is open to all students in all grades.

Key Club – Childrens’ Books Donation Drive

The Key Club will be hosting a book donation drive to support 1000x5 childrens’ literacy program.  Donations will be accepted at the office from April 11-28.

¬ GRAD 2023

Mandatory Grad Assembly – April 13

This is an early reminder that all grade 12's are required to attend a grad assembly NEXT THURSDAY April 13 in block 1. Mark your calendars!!  This assembly will provide all details about graduation: how to know if you are eligible to cross the stage, criteria for completion of courses at SIDES or ILC, grad ceremony, grad dinner/dance, how to get TICKETS (and how many tickets), deadlines, plus you will be provided with all of the necessary paperwork. If you have a spare or if you are not usually at Claremont for block 1, please make arrangements to attend this important assembly.

 

Grad Fundraiser: 50/50 Draw

Here is a chance to support the grad class of 2023, and one lucky person will even win some money!  50/50 draw tickets are sold on-line, and all information is HERE. Single ticket for $10; 3-ticket pack for $20. The jackpot is growing daily, and will depend on how many tickets are sold.

Deadline to buy tickets: midnight, Thursday, April 13, 2023.

Draw: Friday, April 14, 2023 at 3:00 p.m.

 

Grad Fundraiser: Oasis Nails and Spa

Oasis Nails and Spa in Oak Bay is donating $1 from every service in the month of April to the Grad Class!  So, book your pedicure and spa day in the Month of April and support our Grads at the same time.

 

Grad Fundraiser:  Ongoing Bottle Drive

An easy way to support the 2023 Grad Class is by donating empty bottles and beverage containers throughout the school year until June at the Bottle Depot location at Glanford/Quadra.  Account name is “Claremont Grad 2023.” Thank you for supporting the grad class of 2023.

Women in Trades & Technology – April 20

Students, find out about trades and tech opportunities by joining in on Camosun's Women in Trades and Technology Exploration Day!  This interactive event runs on THURSDAY, April 20th from 9:30-2:15.  Deadline to sign up: FRIDAY, April 14.  See Mr. Bussoli in Block 3 or 4, (room 217) for more info and to sign up.

 

Island Camp Ignite: July 7-9

Island Ignite Camp is happening this summer in Victoria, July 7-9th!  This FREE camp is an amazing mentorship opportunity for young women (grades 11 & 12), regardless if they are interested in a career in emergency services, or not.  The program focuses on challenging and empowering participants with team building activities and fire ground tasks, skills and drills, led by an amazing group of volunteers from across the fire-fighting service. SD63 Hairstylist Program

Did you know School District 63 has its own Hair Salon?  You can book your haircuts, styles, and scalp massages starting on April 11, at Studio 63, where students from the SD63/VIU Hairstylist Program perform their skills and services.  For more information, see Mrs. Watson in room 222 or email her at cwatson@saanichschools.ca.  Please see Mr. Bussoli if you're interested in enrolling in the Hairstylist Program.  Studio info.

 

Job Opportunities

Local book publisher, Robert Thomson (of Godwin Books), is looking for a student with computer skills to help with formatting his next book. This is a paid position, and the work could be done at the public library or other computer desks.  For more information, see Mrs. Watson in room 222 or email her at cwatson@saanichschools.ca

 

Mt. Douglas Golf Course is hiring for summer employment for a groundskeeper/gardener!  Work can start as soon as possible, but the main hours will be in the summer (20-40 hours per week).  See Mrs. Watson in room 222 or email her for more information.  HERE are a few more details.

 

Student Volunteer Opportunities

Here is a last-minute FUN volunteering opportunity!  Remax/Neal Estate is looking for volunteers to help at their 24th annual Easter Egg Hunt with hiding eggs, face painting, cupcake decorating, and other fun Easter activities.  All proceeds go to BC Children's Hospital.  The Egg Hunt is THIS SATURDAY, April 8, 9:30-12:00 @ Elk/Beaver Lake.  See Mrs. Watson in room 222 or email her at cwatson@saanichschools.ca for more info.

 

Would you be interested in gaining work experience related to website design, facebook management, and creating content regarding community news? The Cordova Bay Area Association is looking for a volunteer (with possibly a future as a paid job), for their newsletter, ‘The Cordovan’.  See Mrs. Watson in room 222 or email her at cwatson@saanichschools.ca for more information.

 

Sports for Kids is a before-school sports program created by former Claremont students. A volunteer’s role is to help teach kids ages 5-10 how to play sports and gym games. The program will begin mid-April, running on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30am to 8:30am, at Lochside Elementary.  For more information, see Mrs. Watson in room 222 or email her at cwatson@saanichschools.ca

 

30 Hours of Work Experience/Volunteering

30 Hours of Work Experience OR Volunteering are required for Graduation. Hours can be counted from any grade. See Mrs. Watson in room 222 to find out how to confirm your 30 hours. If you're not working, there are lots of ideas for looking into Volunteerism.  You can discuss ideas with Mrs. Watson and she can point out a list of possibilities, such as:

Summer Employment with Saanich School District

Grade 12 Students: The Saanich School District #63 will be hiring summer staff in the Custodial Department!  Full-time, union positions will be available from the end of June until end of August, with the opportunity for continuing employment.  Earn competitive wages vs. minimum wage.  You must have your own transportation, and you must be a graduate by the end of June. ¬ NEWS FROM CLAREMONT PAC

COPACS - is seeking a Vice President next year (Sept 2023-June 2024)

The COPACS Vice Presidents support the President. In practice, this means: attending general and executive meetings; liaising with PACs and their voting delegates (i.e. you folks); liaising with education partners; supporting COPACS committees; and taking on other tasks delegated by our esteemed President. Join the CPAC Exec Team

We are starting to look ahead to the next school year. If you’re interested in joining the CPAC Exec, please reach out to our team!  A few Exec team members will be leaving this year as their grade 12 kids graduate, so we welcome new team members. During the school year, CPAC Exec holds a parent meeting once a month except for December and March. We’d like to hold the AGM this year in May.

Peninsula Youth Clinic

The Peninsula Youth Clinic is located at 2379 Bevan Avenue in Sidney and is open every THURSDAY from 5:30-7:30pm for help with any medical concern (physical, mental, and sexual health). Call 250-656-4143 to make an appointment with a physician or counsellor.  Services are 100% free, confidential, and explicitly inclusive of all genders and sexualities!
